Dolomite is a calcium and magnesium carbonate non-metallic mineral with low hardness, easy breakage, and abundant reserves. Due to its excellent refractoriness and chemical stability, it is widely used in metallurgy, building materials, environmental protection, and new materials, making it a core mineral with extremely high cost-effectiveness in current non-metallic mining. This article briefly describes the standardized green mining process, processing technology, and industry applications of dolomite.

I. Standardized Mining Process for Dolomite Mines

Dolomite mines in China are mainly open-pit mines. Compliant mines strictly adhere to green mining standards. The core process is as follows:

First, geological exploration is conducted to delineate the mining boundaries, complete topsoil stripping, and simultaneously construct slope protection and drainage systems to control soil erosion at the source. Mining employs micro-differential controlled blasting technology to precisely control the size of raw rock blocks, reduce the production of oversized material, and lower the load on subsequent crushing equipment.

After blasting, the raw dolomite ore is collected by loaders and excavators and then transported to the processing plant area via enclosed transport vehicles or belt conveyors. The entire process is equipped with dust suppression spraying devices to control dust pollution. Mining is carried out in zoned operations, with mined-out areas immediately covered with soil and revegetated, and tailings centrally recovered, achieving simultaneous progress in resource development and ecological restoration.

II. Core Crushing and Processing Production Line

Dolomite has a Mohs hardness of 3.5-4, classifying it as a medium-soft stone. The industry mainstream utilizes a two-stage production line: a jaw crusher for coarse crushing and an impact crusher for medium and fine crushing. This mature technology produces an excellent finished product particle shape:

1. Coarse Crushing Stage: Large pieces of raw dolomite are fed into the jaw crusher and processed into medium-sized blocks of 100-250mm, completing the initial diameter reduction.

2. Medium Crushing and Shaping: The impact crusher, as the core equipment, repeatedly crushes and shapes the material through hammer impact and impact chamber rebound. It can adjust the output to produce cubic aggregates of various sizes from 5-80mm, with low needle-like and flaky content. The hydraulic opening design facilitates maintenance of vulnerable parts.

3. Deep Processing Branch: The screened fine material can be fed into a grinding mill to process ultrafine dolomite powder of 325 mesh and above, meeting the high-end needs of fillers, chemicals, and other applications.

III. Main Application Areas

1. Metallurgical Refractory: Calcined dolomite is used in steelmaking slag formation and kiln refractory linings, and is a core raw material for the smelting of metallic magnesium and magnesium alloys.

2. Building Materials Industry: Used in cement blending and glass and ceramic production to improve product structure and reduce firing energy consumption.

3. Environmental Protection and Chemical Industry: Ultrafine powder is used for flue gas desulfurization and neutralization of acidic water bodies, and can also be used to make halogen-free flame-retardant fillers.

4. Agricultural Improvement: Dolomite powder neutralizes acidic soils, supplements calcium and magnesium elements, and improves soil compaction.

Currently, the dolomite industry is transforming from exporting raw stone to intelligent mining and high-value-added deep processing. Green and intelligent mines are popularizing unmanned mining and closed-loop dust removal systems. At the same time, enterprises are focusing on the deep processing of ultrafine modified powders and magnesium-based new materials to improve the comprehensive utilization rate of mineral resources. With the expansion of the new energy and environmental protection industries, the market demand for high-quality dolomite raw materials and supporting crushing and processing equipment will continue to grow.
