Besides serving as an auxiliary device in grinding for pre-classification and secondary screening, spiral classifiers are sometimes used to wash clay-bearing ores, as well as to remove mud and dewater slurries. For example, in gold mining, most gold ores contain impurities and require beneficiation. Classification is a crucial step in this process. Typically, spiral classifiers are used in conjunction with ball mills.
In gold ore beneficiation, the ground slurry enters a water tank through a feed inlet located in the center of the settling zone. Below the inclined water tank is the classification and settling zone for the slurry. A spiral conveyor rotates at low speed, agitating the slurry, suspending fine particles, and allowing them to flow over the overflow weir. Coarse particles settle to the bottom of the water tank and are conveyed by the spiral conveyor to the discharge port as return sand.
